National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

The church continues to be the most influential institution in the Black community. Historically this has been the place where issues of social justice, equality and development have been addressed. As the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS continues to be part of our reality, it is critical that the voices of our congregations are heard with regard to our insistence upon an effective response to this crisis. Racism, classicism, sexism, prejudice, bigotry, homophobia, misogyny and stigma are the demons that are driving this horror and it is imperative for the church to address these negative forces that are raging in our midst. We must assume our proper and vital role as advocates for healing, wholeness, justice, peace, nonviolence, mercy, humility, liberation, inclusiveness, fairness and unconditional love if we are to be able to rid ourselves of this latest life-threatening scourge that is being visited upon our communities. Let us on this National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day rededicate ourselves to the struggle.
